International SEO Day or International Search Engine Optimization Day, is a global event that is celebrated every year on 27th of September. The date coincides with the birth of Google Search engine on the 27th of September 1998.
When Google came online in 1998 it introduced a new way of ranking search engine results (SERPs) by authority and backlinks. All the previous search engines like Yahoo, AltaVista or AskJevves ranked websites by the number of repetition of the main keyword. So if you had let’s say a computer store website, you would be ranked better than your competitors if you repeated the word computer store without any context. This made the searching experience very slow, as you would have to check the links that the search engine gave you, to see if they are the real thing.
Google Search had another logic, it had an algorithm that would rank websites based on how many other websites were recommending it. So, this way every website would get a authority score, and if you spend more time on a website and you visit it often, then this website links to another website, the linked website was probably of good quality. So if you are searching for a computer store website, and you have popular websites that do computer reviews and link en masse to this website, you will get that website recommended in the first position. So, for sure the first position will be very relevant to your search.
In this way the same day that Google Search was born, SEO was born too. SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, and companies aware that there is now order and logic to with their website would be ranked started to invest in their content and started to connect with other players in their industry. This helped all kind of independent experts to come online and share their opinions and to help and point people to the best products and services.
Today Google Search algorithm is very complex, taking many different things into account when ranking, like page content quality, keywords, loading speed, website structure, mobile friendliness, user experience and so on. But still the authority and the relevance is built on mainly on backlinks and it functions on the same basis. Every month or every few months there is an update to Google SEO policy that improves the quality of the search results. So keeping up with Google Search and optimizing SEO is what we do all the time.
